Game Notes (NESN.com)
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Rookie Shea Hillenbrand continued
his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, leading the
Boston Red Sox to an 8-3 victory over the New York Yankees.
Manny Ramirez had three hits and homered for Boston,
which rebounded from Friday's 6-1 loss to New York to win for the sixth
time in seven outings. Paul O'Neill homered and Chuck Knoblauch
had three hits for New York, which had a two-game winning streak snapped
and has dropped five of seven.
Boston starter Frank Castillo (2-1) allowed three runs
on six hits in five innings to pick up his second win over the Yankees
in less than a week. He struck out none and walked one.
New York's Mike Mussina was roughed up after striking
out the side in the first and was tagged with the loss. Mussina (1-2) lasted
just four innings, yielding six runs -- four earned -- and four hits. He
struck out five and walked none before being replaced by rookie Adrian
Hernandez.
New York went up 3-2 in the third on a Bernie Williams
sacrifice fly, but the Red Sox countered with four runs in the fourth to
take a 6-3 lead. Ramirez and Troy O'Leary got back-to-back singles leading
off the frame, and Scott Hatteberg reached on Jeter's fielding error. Hillenbrand
followed with a double to score two runs, and Daubach added a sacrifice
fly for a two-run lead. Merloni's sac fly then scored Hillenbrand for a
6-3 edge.
Hillenbrand has hits in 17 of 18 games in his first
year and improved his batting average to .333.
New York put runners on first and second with two
outs in the seventh, but
Rolando Arrojo got O'Neill to line out to short
to end the frame. Ramirez ripped his fourth homer of the season off
Hernandez in the eighth for a
7-3 lead. Reliever Todd Williams walked Hatteberg
with the bases loaded in the ninth for the final run. The Yankees
got on the board with a pair of runs in the first. Knoblauch led off with
a single, stole second and went to third on Hatteberg's throwing error.
Jeter's sacrifice fly plated Knoblauch, and O'Neill followed with a homer
to right, his sixth of the season. Boston tied the game at
2-2 in the third. Hillenbrand led off with a homer, and
Merloni later singled, stole second and scored
on a Jose Offerman double.
Game Notes
Mussina has 23 strikeouts and zero walks in 25
2/3 innings this season...Boston improved to 13-5 against its AL East opponents,
while New York fell to 4-8...The Red Sox have won five of the last eight
meetings against New York at Yankee Stadium...Hernandez, dubbed "El Duquecito"
for his likeness to unrelated teammate Orlando Hernandez, yielded one run
on two hits in three- plus frames in his big-league debut, striking out
none and walking one...Castillo also earned the win in Monday's 4-1 victory
over the Yankees. Mussina took the loss in that game.
